How to specify a magnet

The better the specification, the faster and more accurate the benchmark. Here is what each field means and why it matters.

  1. Drawing or specification — dimensions, magnetisation direction, coating, tolerances. A drawing beats a description.

  2. Grade or magnetic properties — either the grade (e.g. N42SH) or the required Br and HcJ at operating temperature. If you know the operating point, say so.

  3. Dimensions and tolerances — mark which dimensions are functional.

  4. Coating — and the adhesive or assembly process it must work with.

  5. Magnetisation — direction, and whether delivered magnetised.

  6. Maximum operating temperature — including short peaks.

  7. Prototype quantity — how many samples you need to test.

  8. Annual volume — expected, even if approximate. It determines which production routes are relevant.

  9. Delivery country — for customs, incoterms and lead time.

  10. Target price and current landed-price range — optional, but it lets us tell you immediately whether an alternative route is worth pursuing. We do not need to know your current supplier.
